SHE’S A CORPORATE FASHION BABE…

SECURING MY FIRST INTERNSHIP AT PREMIER

In mid-April, I applied for what I considered to be the perfect internship to get me started – an imaging intern at Premier Model Management. After enquiring about the job, I found out that the role would predominantly be imaging admin work, which, if I’m being candid, felt like a step away from the right direction. Despite this, my desire to work in fashion persisted, and so I decided to take the interview anyway.

A random day in late April, 13:05 PM

My interview was a call scheduled for 1PM, so naturally, I spent the entire morning sitting by my phone. By 13:10, I decided I had already been rejected, so what did I have to lose by giving them a call? Melodramatic once again because it turns out the receptionist had booked the call during her lunch and was simply running late. Lol.

After a super friendly interview, I found out the internship was 3 months long and began in June. Not ideal for a DPS candidate as it wouldn’t qualify for the year. However, I also discovered there was indeed an opportunity to work creatively, helping with graphic design and social media as part of the art department, as well as the possibility for an extension if offered by the senior art department manager.

After the interview was over, I sent a follow-up email thanking them for their time. (HIGHLY recommend) The same day i received a job offer! All of a sudden, it felt very real, and the self-doubt really started to kick in. All I could think about was how in no world could I even be considered remotely comparable to a model, so how the hell could I work in an agency full of categorically beautiful people???? This anxiety sat with me for the weeks leading up to my start, and to be honest, I even considered turning down the offer because I was sure I was inadequate. I say this not for sympathy but to serve as a reminder that I almost let the best year of my life pass me by due to vanity or a lack thereof. Ridiculous looking back now.

The anxiety-combatting lesson I learnt during this process was, in the grand scheme of things, nothing is that important, and it’s probably not personal. That is not to say you don’t matter – I just learnt that usually, when people are running late, or your email goes unread, when your contract takes a little extra time to come through or when your call gets rescheduled, it’s more than likely NOT PERSONAL. it’s not that you don’t matter or aren’t liked, but more likely that everyone is just trying their best. Everyone has a busy life and a never-ending to-do list, so try not to take it so personally when things don’t go exactly to plan; extend a little grace, and it usually works out well in the end!!
